With this gadget, any iPhone can get satellite connection | Gadgets 36T |
Those without
an iPhone 14 can still enjoy satellite connectivity with the upcoming Motorola
Defy Satellite Link solution.
Motorola Defy
Satellite Link, which uses the latest MediaTek chips with satellite
compatibility, enables satellite communication with your smartphone. It uses
Bluetooth, so most modern smartphones can use this feature.
MediaTek has
partnered with Bullitt Group to connect Motorola Defy Satellite Link and CAT
S75 smartphones to the Bullitt Satellite Connect platform. As a result, Bullitt
Satellite Connect users have worldwide access to two-way satellite
communications, location sharing, and emergency SOS.
With the
Bullitt Satellite Messenger app, the Defy Satellite Link can send and receive
messages, share someone's location and contact 911 in the event of an accident.
This can also be done outside of cellular coverage, similar to Apple's
emergency SOS feature via satellite.
This rugged
device is IP68 water and dust resistant and conforms to the MIL-Spec 810H
ruggedness standard. It weighs about 2.5 ounces and is 11mm thick, with a metal
ring for attaching to a backpack or lanyard.
Price & Availability
The Motorola
Defy Satellite Link will be available in April for $99. The Bullitt Satellite
Messenger app subscription costs $5 per month, which gives you access to the
SOS emergency service. The
App is not yet
available for download, but requires iOS 14 or later.
